Keizo Matsumura, who served as chief designer at the Kurashiki Architectural Institute, wrote in Shinkenchiku at the time of completion:
“By the time the ginkgo trees sent from the hotel at its opening have grown into large, lush trees lining the street, this hotel, too, will have put down deep and strong roots in the climate and among the people of Kurashiki, welcoming visitors from around the world.”
Now, 50 years later, not only those involved with the hotel and with Urabe Sekkei but also the citizens of Kurashiki—who play a role in promoting the city—fully recognize the value of this building. The Kurashiki Kokusai Hotel has truly taken root in Kurashiki. Even after more than half a century, renovations and maintenance have been carried out with full respect for the original designer’s intentions, making it a hotel that could serve as a model for others.
