    • This architecture was an early expression of the maturity of civil society in Setagaya and of aspirations for the future development of a free and open civic society, realized through the advanced technologies available at the time. Its significance lies not only in its function and design, but also in the creation of a welcoming plaza where residents of all ages and backgrounds can gather; the site has also been recognized as one of Setagaya’s Community Landscape Assets.

More than fifty years have passed since the Ward Hall first came into use. During that time, many residents have held their wedding ceremonies here and participated in coming-of-age ceremonies and other events marking important milestones in their lives. These occasions have become irreplaceable pages in the personal histories and memories of Setagaya’s residents. The complex also holds countless memories for local assembly members, the staff who have worked here, and the many residents who have visited it. These accumulated memories are themselves part of the history and culture of Setagaya. It is hoped that the complex will continue to be used and cherished as living heritage for generations to come.
