In the heart of Old Karuizawa (Japan’s choice resort), finds a small wooden church Antonin Raymond. Its shingled roof and unique shape of the belfry suggest their inspirational origin as, most probably, from the distant images of rustic houses in the Bohemian forests in the Czech Republic where he was originally from. A simple yet solacing interior space is created with the bare chestnut logs ruggedly crisscrossed in scissors truss structure and with the delicate details of Japanese Washi papers applied on the panes. This is among Raymond’s major pre-WWII works that illustrates a strong and almost primordial power in his architecture.
