  • Hiroshima Teishin Clinic, the Outpatient Wing

    • Current Name: Hiroshima Teishin Hospital, former Outpatient Wing Atomic Bomb Victims Archives
    • Category: Medical facility
    • Architect: Mamoru YAMADA (the Ministry of communications, Building and Repairs Section)
    • Construction: Sakamoto-gumi
    • Year: 1935
    • Location: Hiroshima
    • Mamoru Yamada designed many hospitals, but this is the first one he worked on. Yamada also travelled to Europe between 1929 - 1930, and was greatly influenced by the European modern movement of the time. Unique design manipulations include the rhythmic arrangement of large square windows, which at the time of completion had awnings, and the change of elevation with bay windows in the corners. As one of the few surviving examples of the International Style in Japan during the period of its reception, this building is important as a building that conveys the memory of the atomic bombing and retains sufficient design features to convey the appearance of the building at the time of its construction, although there have been some reductions in construction.
