Kyoto Kaikan, neighboring Heian-jingu shrines, sits as a multi-purpose cultural complex comprised of a concert hall, a theatre, and an international convention center. It was designed to be harmonious with the rich surroundings with a vista of Higashi-yama (hills). The complex was laid out to form a courtyard, and an assertive strip of oversized and deep concrete eaves binds the assembled buildings horizontally. Mayekawa sought to create a modern architecture complex that would fit in with the historic tradition of Kyoto cityscape and that would appreciate in its quality by aging well as time passes by.
