St. Mary’s Cathedral Tokyo
- Category: Religious building
- Architect: Kenzo TANGE
- Construction: Taisei Corporation
- Year: 1964
- Location: Tokyo
- Located in the placid residential area, Mejiro, in the northwestern part of Tokyo, stands a modern cathedral Kenzo Tange. Adopting a different design strategy compared to his Tokyo Olympic complex done also in 1964, the cathedral design is composed with 8 separate hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) shell walls that are combined in 4 sets of two each to be placed in a cross plan. The apparatus of glass embedded narrow gaps within each set along the vertical and roof-top edges, together, portrays a light formed-cross in the interior during the day and also in the exterior at night. The eloquent swell of the HP shell walls help augment the serene and solacing sense of space inside.
