On an elongated island in the middle of a river, stands the Osaka headquarters for a leading Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shimbun. It is a strikingly modern office building that manifested the architectural panache of the modern movement in Japan in the late 1920's to early 1930's, as well as being a major representative work of Jun-ichiro Ishikawa. The exterior design assumes a ship’s metaphor, and made up with the newly available materials such as large aluminum and stainless-steel panels and large glass panes. As evidenced in its inaugurate review, “the most sensational building ever built in Japan”, he attempted to depict the pioneering character of enlightenment that the newspaper media have to the society.
