In 2004, 80 works completed prior to 1970 were added, bringing the number of
selections to 100, then in May 2005, the exhibition “DOCOMOMO Japan: The 100 Selections: Modernist Architecture as Cultural Heritage” was held at the Panasonic Shiodome Museum.
While adhering to the selection criteria established for the first 20, by taking into
consideration the regional diversity across Japan, works including examples of wooden
architecture were selected regardless of the fame of their architects. Spatial designs and
technologies that symbolize their respective eras, such as the Osaka Municipal Subway
Midosuji Line [031], the Shinjuku West Exit Plaza [091], and the factory-manufactured,
prefabricated house Sekisui Heim M1 [100], were also included in the selection.
Around this time, the presentation of commemorative plaques to the selected buildings
was inaugurated.
As of 2026, among the newly selected works, eight works have been designated as
Important Cultural Properties, and 18 works are being maintained as Registered
Tangible Cultural Properties or Local Cultural Properties, but 19 works have been
demolished.
