    • Only a short distance away from the bustle of the Ikeburo Station, in a surprisingly quiet area, stands a school complex designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Yoshikazu and Motoko Hani gave the commission to Wright while he was in Japan for the Imperial Hotel project. The complex, built in the American style of wooden stud and plywood 2 by 4 construction system, consists of the west and east wings of classrooms and a central structure in a meticulously symmetrical “U” shaped layout. Wright fully implemented his Prairie Style concept; e.g., the lawn design for establishing the prairie like ground base, the adoption of a smaller, house scale as opposed to the public scale in design for a more human, personal feel, and the setting of the first floor level at the same level as the ground plane for horizontal emphasis. Consequently, it succeeded in giving a warm and unified ambience. The complex was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1997.
